The Monkey Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis) is a rare and whimsical cactus native to the cloud forests of Bolivia. It’s instantly recognizable for its long, trailing stems covered in soft, fuzzy white spines—earning it the nickname “monkey tail.” In its natural habitat, it grows hanging from cliffs or trees, and in cultivation, it's a showstopper in hanging baskets. As it matures, it produces bright, tubular red-pink flowers that bloom from the sides of the stems, adding a vivid contrast to the soft, silvery spines. These blooms often appear in late spring or summer and can attract pollinators if placed outdoors.
In the home, Monkey Tail Cactus thrives in bright, direct light. A sunny south- or west-facing window will help it grow thick, healthy stems and encourage flowering. It enjoys warmth and dry conditions, similar to other cacti, but appreciates occasional airflow—making it a great candidate for outdoor living during warmer months (just keep it out of heavy rain). Indoors, make sure it gets as much light as possible to mimic its high-altitude environment.
For care, water deeply but only when the soil is completely dry—this cactus does not tolerate excess moisture. Use a gritty, well-draining cactus mix, and reduce watering in winter when it's dormant. During the growing season, a light feeding of cactus fertilizer once a month can encourage stronger growth and more blooms. Given time and proper care, your Monkey Tail Cactus can grow cascading stems over 3 feet long and reward you with gorgeous, unexpected bursts of color in the form of vivid flowers—making it a true conversation piece in any collection.

from 816 reviewsBeautiful plant! Very well packaged and timely shipping!
The plant arrived in perfect condition and is beautiful. I love it!
Despite the “beginner” name, I’d say it’s genuinely useful at any experience level. It starts with a solid foundation for those just getting into houseplants, but the depth of the later guides means it doesn’t feel like it’s talking down to anyone with more experience. It’s less about basic care instructions and more about building a real understanding of how plants function, which is useful whether you’re keeping your first pothos alive or managing a larger, more varied collection.
What sets it apart is the emphasis on understanding why plants behave the way they do, not just prescribing one-size-fits-all care instructions. This approach makes it easier to recognize early warning signs and address issues before they become serious problems.
Overall, I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a more thorough, connected understanding of plant care rather than piecemeal advice — regardless of how long you’ve been growing.

Learning so much and am thoroughly enjoying the beginners plant guide series. The pest guide helped me successfully defeat fungus gnats and taught me to transition to bottom watering. Thanks Mel!!
