The Monkey Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis) is a rare and whimsical cactus native to the cloud forests of Bolivia. It’s instantly recognizable for its long, trailing stems covered in soft, fuzzy white spines—earning it the nickname “monkey tail.” In its natural habitat, it grows hanging from cliffs or trees, and in cultivation, it's a showstopper in hanging baskets. As it matures, it produces bright, tubular red-pink flowers that bloom from the sides of the stems, adding a vivid contrast to the soft, silvery spines. These blooms often appear in late spring or summer and can attract pollinators if placed outdoors.

In the home, Monkey Tail Cactus thrives in bright, direct light. A sunny south- or west-facing window will help it grow thick, healthy stems and encourage flowering. It enjoys warmth and dry conditions, similar to other cacti, but appreciates occasional airflow—making it a great candidate for outdoor living during warmer months (just keep it out of heavy rain).
