Ficus microcarpa, commonly known as the Ginseng Ficus or Chinese Banyan, is a popular indoor bonsai thanks to its thick, sculptural trunk and glossy, oval-shaped leaves. It’s an excellent choice for beginners, as it’s relatively hardy and adaptable to indoor environments. The plant has a naturally compact growth habit and responds well to shaping, making it easy to maintain its classic bonsai form with regular pruning and styling.

This bonsai thrives in bright, indirect light. The best placement is near an east- or west-facing window, where it can enjoy several hours of soft sunlight. It can also tolerate some direct morning light, but harsh afternoon rays—especially from a south-facing window—should be filtered to prevent leaf scorch. Insufficient light can cause the tree to drop leaves or become leggy, so aim for a consistent, well-lit spot. Rotate the plant occasionally for even growth.

Keep the soil slightly moist, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in soggy soil, as it’s prone to root rot. Ficus microcarpa prefers temperatures between 60–75°F (16–24°C) and appreciates moderate humidity—use a humidity tray or mist occasionally if your home is dry. Fertilize monthly in spring and summer with a diluted bonsai or balanced liquid fertilizer. With the right lighting, regular watering, and a little pruning, your Ficus bonsai will remain a healthy, elegant feature in your home.
