Dieffenbachia, often called Dumb Cane, is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It grows naturally beneath dense tree canopies where light is filtered and humidity is high. This plant is known for its large, patterned leaves and upright growth, making it a popular indoor foliage plant. All parts of Dieffenbachia are toxic if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of pets and children.

Dieffenbachia prefers bright indirect light to maintain strong growth and good leaf color. An east or west facing window or a spot a few feet back from a south or west window is ideal. It can tolerate medium light, but growth will slow and variegation may fade. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, especially in afternoon light, so avoid placing it in full sun.

Water Dieffenbachia when the top two inches of soil are dry, then water thoroughly and allow excess to drain away. Consistently soggy soil can lead to root rot, while letting the plant dry out too much may cause lower leaves to yellow and drop. Use a well draining soil mix and a pot with drainage holes. Dieffenbachia prefers warm temperatures and average to higher humidity. Rotate the plant regularly for even growth and trim back leggy stems to encourage fuller growth.

CAUTION:
Always wear gloves when pruning a dumb cane to avoid skin contact with the plant sap. Also avoid touching your face and eyes.
