Colocasia 'Maui Sunrise' is a stunning elephant ear known for its dramatic contrast of colors and oversized foliage. Developed from tropical Colocasia species native to Southeast Asia, this variety features bright chartreuse to golden-green leaves highlighted by deep burgundy to purple veins and stems. The vibrant coloration gives the impression of sunlight shining through the foliage, which inspired its name. As the plant matures, it forms a bold tropical clump that quickly becomes a focal point in containers, landscapes, or large indoor growing spaces.

Place Colocasia 'Maui Sunrise' directly in front of an east-facing or south-facing window where it can receive the brightest conditions available indoors. This is a high-light plant that thrives with abundant natural light and warmth. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage. Strong light helps maintain the vibrant leaf color and supports the rapid growth Colocasias are known for. Lower light can result in smaller leaves and less intense coloration.

Water when the root zone is beginning to dry, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to monitor moisture levels throughout the container. Unlike many houseplants, Colocasias prefer consistent moisture and can tolerate wetter conditions than most tropicals when grown in a well-aerated mix. A chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite works well while still allowing oxygen to reach the roots. Large leaves may droop when the plant becomes thirsty, while yellowing leaves and slow growth can indicate the roots are staying too wet and lacking oxygen. During active growth, expect older outer leaves to naturally fade as new leaves emerge from the center.
