ZZ plants (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) are known for their shiny, deep green leaves and tough, adaptable nature. Native to Eastern Africa, ZZs are drought-tolerant thanks to their thick, potato-like rhizomes that store water. What makes them truly unique is their ability to thrive in places where other plants would struggle — they’re one of the few houseplants that can genuinely handle neglect. With their sculptural upright stems and slow, steady growth, ZZs add elegance and structure to any room.

When it comes to lighting, ZZ plants are champions of flexibility. They can survive in low light, but they do best in bright, indirect light, such as near an east- or north-facing window. To avoid leggy or stretched-out growth, keep your ZZ plant away from deep shade or very low light for long periods. If it starts reaching or becoming sparse, move it closer to filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sun, especially hot afternoon rays from a south- or west-facing window, as that can scorch the leaves.

ZZs grow slowly — you might only see one or two new shoots a year, especially indoors. To keep them happy for years to come, water only when the soil is completely dry (usually every 2–3 weeks), and always plant in well-draining soil. Skip repotting until the plant is clearly outgrowing its pot, and feed sparingly in spring or summer with a diluted houseplant fertilizer. Rotate your plant every few weeks to encourage even growth, and wipe the leaves occasionally to keep that glossy look. With minimal care and the right light, a ZZ plant will stay beautiful and reliable for many years.
