Pedilanthus tithymaloides ‘Variegata’, commonly called variegated devil’s backbone, is a succulent native to Central America known for its zig-zagging stems lined with small, oval leaves edged in cream and green, often flushed with pink under strong light. The stems grow in a distinct back-and-forth pattern, giving it a sculptural, architectural look that stands out from typical leafy plants. It stays upright but can branch and become fuller over time.

Light is key to keeping the variegation strong and the growth compact. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives the strongest natural light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. Too little light will cause the variegation to fade and the stems to stretch with wider spacing between leaves, while strong light enhances the pink tones and keeps the zig-zag structure tight.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it fast-draining. If the stems begin to elongate and lose their tight zig-zag pattern, it is reaching for more light. If leaves start to drop while still firm, it is often from environmental change rather than watering. Soft stems or yellowing at the base point to excess moisture at the roots rather than underwatering.
