The Tradescantia sillamontana, often called the White Velvet or Cobweb Spiderwort, is a tough yet stunning plant native to the arid regions of northeastern Mexico. What makes it unique is its silvery-green leaves blanketed in fine white hairs, giving it a soft, fuzzy, cobweb-like appearance. This natural coating not only gives the plant its charm but also helps protect it from strong sun and dry conditions, making it more drought tolerant than many other houseplants.

This Tradescantia loves bright light and even tolerates some direct sunlight, especially from an east- or west-facing window. In fact, the more light it receives, the more compact and vibrant its growth will be. While it can survive in lower light, it may become leggy and lose some of its striking character. Outdoors in warm climates, it can be grown in containers or as groundcover, but indoors it thrives best in a sunny window or under a grow light.

Caring for Tradescantia sillamontana is simple and rewarding. Unlike many of its tropical cousins, this variety prefers drier conditions—allow the soil to dry almost completely between waterings. Overwatering is its biggest enemy, so good drainage is a must. Fertilize lightly once a month during the growing season to keep it strong and full. With its unusual texture and easygoing nature, this plant is both a conversation piece and a hardy addition to your collection.
