Tradescantia mundula ‘Tricolor’ is a fast-growing trailing plant native to South America known for its small, glossy leaves patterned with green, cream, white, and soft pink. What makes this plant special is its delicate pastel variegation. New growth can emerge heavily pink or cream, while older foliage develops a layered mix of colors, creating a dense cascading plant when regularly trimmed.
Light is critical for maintaining the tricolor pattern. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light with some gentle direct sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the pink and cream coloration fades, new growth becomes increasingly green, and the spacing between leaves increases. Strong, even light keeps the vines compact and maintains brighter variegation.
Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Use a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. Avoid keeping the base of the stems continuously wet because Tradescantia can develop stem and root rot quickly in saturated conditions. Average household humidity is usually sufficient when paired with good airflow, and avoiding consistently wet foliage helps prevent spotting and damage.
Watch the newest growth for the clearest signals. Tight leaf spacing with strong pink, cream, and green coloration indicates good light. Long spaces between leaves or increasingly green growth usually mean it needs more light. Crispy brown areas on the pale portions can develop from inconsistent moisture or excessive light intensity, while soft stems at the soil line with wet soil point to excess moisture. Regular trimming encourages branching, and planting the cuttings back into the pot is the easiest way to maintain a thick, full plant.
