Tradescantia F Tricolor

Tradescantia fluminensis ‘Tricolor’ is a fast-growing trailing plant native to South America known for its small, pointed leaves striped and splashed with green, cream, white, and soft pink. What makes this plant special is the amount of color packed into its compact foliage. The pink tones are strongest on newer growth, while mature vines develop a layered mix of green and cream, making it especially attractive in hanging baskets or trailing from shelves.

Light is critical for maintaining the tricolor pattern. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light with some gentle direct sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, new growth becomes increasingly green, the pink coloration fades, and the spaces between leaves become longer. Strong, even light keeps the vines compact and helps maintain the brightest pink and cream coloration.

Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Use a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. Avoid keeping the soil continuously wet, especially around the base of the stems, where rot can develop quickly. Average household humidity is usually sufficient with good airflow, and keeping water off the foliage helps prevent spotting and damaged leaves.

The growth pattern is one of the easiest ways to read this plant. Tight leaf spacing, strong pink coloration, and dense branching indicate good light and healthy growth. Long bare sections between leaves or increasingly green growth signal that it needs more light. Soft stems near the soil line with wet soil point to excess moisture, while limp foliage with a dry root zone indicates it is ready for water. Regular trimming encourages branching, and the cuttings root easily, making it simple to plant them back into the pot to keep the plant full.
