Stephania erecta is a caudiciform plant native to Southeast Asia, grown for its large, rounded woody caudex and delicate vines carrying small, rounded green leaves. During active growth, slender vines emerge from the caudex and can be allowed to trail or given a small trellis to climb. What makes Stephania special is its dramatic seasonal transformation—the exposed caudex can appear completely dormant and then suddenly produce a canopy of fine vines and foliage when a new growth cycle begins.

Light supports compact vines, healthy foliage, and energy storage in the caudex. Place it in an east or south-facing window with strong, consistent light, protecting the caudex and foliage from prolonged intense sun until acclimated. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned about 8–12 inches above the foliage. Long, weak vines with widely spaced leaves are a good indication that it needs stronger light.

Allow the soil to dry substantially between waterings and use a very fast-draining mix with plenty of coarse material and aeration. The caudex should sit partially above the soil rather than being deeply buried. During active growth, water thoroughly once the root zone has dried, then allow excess water to drain completely. When the vines naturally yellow and die back and the plant enters dormancy, dramatically reduce watering because a dormant caudex without actively growing foliage uses very little water.

Watch its growth cycle rather than expecting it to look the same throughout the year. Fresh vines and firm green leaves indicate active growth, while yellowing vines followed by leaf drop can simply mean the plant is entering dormancy. A firm dormant caudex is not a dead plant and should not be repeatedly watered in an attempt to force new growth. A caudex becoming soft or mushy, particularly with wet soil, is a warning sign of excess moisture and possible rot.

Stephania erecta naturally goes dormant, often for several weeks to a few months. Although the exact timing and length can vary with the plant and growing conditions. As dormancy begins, the vines and leaves will yellow, dry, and eventually die back; this is normal and does not mean the caudex is dying. Once the foliage has died back, stop regular watering and keep the caudex warm, dry, and in good light with airflow around it. Do not keep watering a bare caudex trying to wake it up, because without active foliage and roots using that moisture, rot becomes the bigger risk. As temperatures and conditions trigger another growth cycle, a new growth point will emerge from the top of the firm caudex; once vines and leaves begin actively developing, gradually resume watering rather than immediately soaking the pot.

The Stephania erecta pictured are actively waking from dormancy and beginning a new growth cycle. These plants naturally move between periods of active growth and dormancy, so their appearance changes dramatically throughout the year. Your plant may arrive with small emerging shoots like those pictured, longer established vines, or it may eventually enter dormancy and lose its foliage completely. This is a normal part of the plant’s lifecycle and does not mean the plant has died. The large, firm caudex stores the energy needed to produce its next round of vines and foliage, and each plant will progress through its growth cycle at its own pace.
