Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Dracaena hanningtonii ‘Banana’ Variegata (formerly Sansevieria), variegated banana snake plant, is a compact succulent native to Africa known for its short, thick, canoe-shaped leaves with creamy white striping along the edges. What makes this plant special is its stacked, low-growing form—the leaves grow outward in a tight rosette with a chunky, sculptural look that stays compact and architectural.

Light drives both variegation and leaf structure. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the creamy variegation fades and the leaves stretch longer and thinner. Strong light keeps the plant compact, firm, and more vividly patterned.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant stores water in its thick leaves—if they wrinkle slightly while staying firm, it’s ready for water. If the base softens or leaves begin collapsing outward, the roots are staying too wet. Slow growth is normal, but stretching or fading color almost always points to light rather than watering.

This plant communicates through its structure and color. Tight, upright leaves with bright variegation indicate healthy light levels and stable moisture. Leaves spreading outward or losing contrast signal it needs stronger light. A firm base means the roots are healthy, while yellowing or softness at the crown points to excess moisture rather than underwatering.
