Spider plants Chlorophytum comosum are native to tropical and southern Africa where they grow as understory plants spreading by runners rather than growing upright. In nature they live in loose well draining soil with consistent moisture and bright filtered light which explains why they adapt so easily to indoor spaces and are so forgiving while still giving clear signals when something is off.

For watering spider plants prefer a soak and dry rhythm not constant moisture. Use the same technique I teach across plant care bottom water when possible so the roots pull up what they need then allow the pot to drain fully. Let the soil dry partway down before watering again not bone dry but never staying wet. A chopstick or moisture meter check works well here and clear pots make it even easier to see when roots and soil are ready. Overwatering shows up fast on spider plants so restraint is key.

Direction of light matters more than people think. Spider plants do best in bright indirect light from an east or north window and can tolerate south light if pulled back from the glass. Low light slows growth and fades variegation while too much direct sun causes pale leaves and crispy tips. Their signals are very clear browning tips usually point to water quality inconsistent watering or salt buildup while limp pale leaves often mean low light or roots staying too wet. When happy the leaves stay firm arching outward and the plant sends out runners which is the clearest signal that conditions are right.
