Curly Spider Plant | Chlorophytum comosum ‘Bonnie’
A curly Spider Plant is a compact form of the familiar Spider Plant, grown for its long, narrow leaves that twist and curl rather than growing completely straight. Green and white striping follows the curves of the foliage, creating a full, almost ribbon-like appearance. It belongs to the same species as traditional Spider Plants and originates from a group native to southern Africa. Its naturally curled foliage and smaller, denser habit make it especially well suited to shelves and hanging baskets.
Growth begins from a central crown and gradually develops into a dense clump of arching foliage. Established plants can produce long flowering stems carrying small white flowers followed by baby plantlets, often called spiderettes. Those plantlets can remain attached and cascade around the mother plant or be rooted separately. It does not climb and does not need a pole or other vertical support.
For natural light, start approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window. Aim for approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Useful light supports dense growth and helps maintain the variegation, while too little can produce slower growth, longer weaker leaves and fewer flowers and plantlets. Window direction and distance are starting points because season, trees, overhangs, screens, glass and window size can change how much light reaches the foliage.
Under grow lights, use a 5000–6500K full-spectrum grow light approximately 10–14 inches above the top of the foliage as a starting point, aiming for approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Because the foliage arches outward as the plant fills in, good coverage across the entire crown helps maintain even, compact growth.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow the root zone to use a good portion of its available moisture before watering thoroughly again. The thick, fleshy roots can store water, so constantly saturated soil is unnecessary, but repeatedly allowing the entire root system to become extremely dry can lead to limp foliage and browned tips. Use a well-draining mix and a container with enough room for the developing root system without dramatically oversizing the pot.
Read the entire plant rather than using a calendar. Leaves becoming softer or losing some of their usual firmness can accompany a plant that has used much of its available water. Pale, weak or increasingly stretched new growth can be a reason to check light. Brown leaf tips can have several causes, including repeated severe dry periods or mineral and salt accumulation, so tip browning alone should be treated as a clue rather than a diagnosis.
Success looks like a dense crown of actively growing curled foliage with strong green and white patterning. As the plant becomes established, flowering stems and cascading spiderettes are another sign of mature active growth. A healthy plant can eventually become a full, layered display of curled leaves, flowers and baby plants surrounding the original crown.
