Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Snake plants are among the most adaptable houseplants, known for their upright, sword-like leaves and thick underground rhizomes that store water and energy. Native to the dry regions of West Africa, they are well suited to typical indoor conditions and are often chosen for their durability. Their slow, steady growth makes them an excellent choice for beginners, but they also thrive in experienced collections when given the right conditions.

Snake plants grow best in an east-, south-, or west-facing window where they receive several hours of bright natural light each day. While they tolerate lower light, growth will be slower, leaves may become thinner, and variegation can become less pronounced. If using a grow light, position it 8–12 inches above the foliage for approximately 10–12 hours per day.

Water thoroughly only after the root zone has dried. Rather than watering on a schedule, use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to determine when the roots are ready for water. Snake plants store moisture in both their leaves and rhizomes, allowing them to tolerate dry conditions much better than consistently wet soil. A well-draining soil mix and a pot with drainage are essential to maintaining healthy roots.

Signals your snake plant is making: Soft or yellowing leaves usually indicate the roots are staying too wet, while wrinkled or slightly folded leaves often signal the plant is ready for water. Thin, stretched, or slow-growing leaves generally point to insufficient light. Flowering is typically a sign of a mature, healthy plant growing in stable conditions and is not usually a sign of stress.

Pet Friendly: No. Snake plants are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested and may cause drooling, vomiting, nausea, and gastrointestinal upset.
