Senecio stapeliiformis, now more commonly classified as Curio stapeliiformis, is a striking succulent native to the dry regions of South Africa. Commonly known as the Pickle Plant, it features upright, cylindrical stems with distinctive purple striping and soft leaf remnants along the ribs, giving it the appearance of a cactus even though it is not one. During the growing season, mature plants produce vibrant orange-red flowers that emerge from the tips of the stems, creating a dramatic contrast against the blue-green foliage. Its unusual form and drought tolerance make it a favorite among succulent collectors.

Place Senecio stapeliiformis directly in front of a south-facing window where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight each day. This is a high-light succulent that maintains its compact growth and rich coloration with abundant light. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the stems and run 12–14 hours daily if natural light is limited. Insufficient light often causes the stems to elongate, lose their distinctive striping, and lean toward the light source.

Water only when the root zone is completely dry, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to confirm the soil has dried throughout the container before watering. A fast-draining mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides the airflow and drainage needed to keep the roots healthy. Firm stems indicate a healthy, hydrated plant, while wrinkling suggests it is ready for water. Soft or mushy stems are usually a sign the root zone has remained wet for too long. Warm temperatures, excellent airflow, and plenty of light are the keys to keeping this unusual succulent healthy and compact.
