Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Umbrella Tree, Schefflera arboricola, is native to Taiwan and parts of southern China and is known for its glossy, hand-like leaf clusters that radiate out like an umbrella. It grows as a woody shrub or small tree indoors, giving it a structured, full look that works well as a statement plant. It’s popular because it’s durable, adapts well to indoor conditions, and can be shaped over time with pruning.

Place this plant in a south or west-facing window about 3–6 feet from the glass, or an east-facing window 1–3 feet away. It handles a range of light, but stronger light keeps it fuller and more compact. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 10–12 inches above the canopy. If the plant becomes leggy or drops leaves, it needs more light. If leaves start to pale or show scorch, the light may be too intense.

Water using a chopstick or meter and let the soil dry about halfway to almost fully before watering again. This plant prefers to dry out more than staying consistently moist. Overwatering will lead to yellowing and leaf drop, while underwatering can cause leaves to droop and become crispy. It tolerates average home humidity and responds well to pruning if you want to control height or encourage bushier growth.
