Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Sansevieria masoniana ‘Variegata’ (now Dracaena masoniana), commonly called variegated whale fin, is a tropical plant native to Central Africa known for its massive, paddle-shaped leaves with marbled green and creamy yellow variegation. What makes this plant special is its bold, oversized single-leaf look—thick, sculptural foliage with irregular variegation that makes each leaf unique and highly collectible.

Light drives both variegation and overall strength of the leaf. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without harsh direct sun sitting on the leaf for long periods. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the variegation fades and the plant leans more green. Strong, even light keeps the pattern brighter and supports thicker, more stable growth.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant stores water in its thick leaf—if it begins to wrinkle slightly while staying firm, it’s ready for water. If the base softens or turns yellow, the roots are staying too wet. Slow growth is normal, but fading variegation or thinner leaves point to light levels, not watering.
