Dracaena trifasciata (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata), commonly called snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, is a succulent native to West Africa known for its upright, sword-shaped leaves marked with bands of green, gray, or yellow depending on the variety. What makes this plant special is its architectural form and exceptional adaptability. It is one of the most forgiving houseplants, thriving in a wide range of indoor environments while maintaining a clean, sculptural appearance.
Light influences both growth rate and coloration. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light, although it will tolerate lower light conditions. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, growth slows significantly and variegated varieties may lose some of their color intensity. Strong, even light keeps the leaves shorter, sturdier, and more vibrant while encouraging new pups.
Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. Snake plants store water in both their leaves and underground rhizomes, making them highly drought tolerant. If the leaves wrinkle slightly while remaining firm, the plant is ready for water. If the base softens or leaves begin collapsing while the soil is wet, the roots or rhizomes are staying too saturated.
This plant communicates through its leaves and growth habit. Firm, upright leaves and steady pup production indicate healthy growing conditions. Long, leaning leaves or slow, sparse growth usually signal the plant needs more light. Soft, mushy leaves always point to excess moisture, while wrinkled leaves indicate it has gone too long without water. Because snake plants naturally spread through underground rhizomes, crowded pots often encourage faster pup production rather than harming the plant.
