Epiphyllum anguliger, commonly called Ric Rac cactus or zig zag cactus, is a trailing epiphytic cactus known for its flat, deeply lobed stems that grow in a unique zig-zag pattern. The bright green segments create a bold, sculptural look that stands out from typical desert cacti. As it matures, it can produce large, fragrant night-blooming flowers, adding even more interest to its already striking form.
Light should be bright but indirect. Place it in an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window where it gets steady light without direct sun hitting the stems. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K at 300–700 foot-candles. Too much direct sun can cause the flat segments to yellow or scorch, while too little light will slow growth and reduce the chance of flowering.
Watering should be more frequent than desert cacti but still controlled. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy and fast-draining. If the segments start to thin and lose firmness, it needs more consistent moisture. If they begin to yellow or feel soft at the base, it’s staying too wet. Slower growth with long gaps between segments can point to not enough light rather than watering.
