Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Disocactus anguliger | Ric Rac Cactus
Deep zigzag stems give the Ric Rac Cactus its unmistakable fishbone shape. What look like long, wavy leaves are actually flattened succulent stems, with deep alternating lobes running along each side. Mature plants can also produce large, fragrant flowers, adding another layer to a plant that is already interesting without blooms. Native to Mexico, this is an epiphytic cactus that naturally grows on trees rather than rooted into the dry ground conditions we often associate with desert cacti.
New growth begins more upright before the stems lengthen, arch and eventually trail over the sides of the pot. Mature stems can become several feet long, creating a full cascading plant that works especially well in a hanging basket or on a high shelf. It does not need a support. Branching from the base and along established stems gradually builds a fuller plant.
For natural light indoors, place it directly in an east-facing window or approximately 2–3 feet from a south-facing window. Aim for approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the stems. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Good usable light helps produce sturdy, substantial growth and can support flowering once the plant is mature. If new stems become increasingly narrow, thin or stretched compared with the older growth, look at how much usable light is actually reaching the plant.
Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture approximately 10–14 inches above the canopy, aiming for 800–1,500 foot-candles at the stems. As the plant begins cascading, pay attention to where the active growing ends are located. The top of the pot can remain well lit while long trailing stems gradually move outside the strongest part of the fixture’s coverage.
Water when your plant needs watered. Although this is a cactus with fleshy stems capable of storing moisture, its epiphytic growth habit means its roots behave differently from those of a desert cactus. Allow a good portion of the available moisture to be used before watering thoroughly again, but it does not need to remain completely dry for extended periods during active growth. Give the roots a loose, airy substrate with chunky orchid bark, coarse perlite or pumice and enough potting material to retain some moisture without creating a dense root zone.
Watch the newest sections of stem. They give you a much better picture of current conditions than older growth that formed months ago. Healthy new stems should gradually become substantial and develop the characteristic deep zigzag shape. Progressively thinner or narrower growth can point you toward usable light, while softening stems combined with a pot that remains wet for a long time are a reason to look at the roots and how quickly the plant is using water. Slight wrinkling can also tell you the plant has used a significant amount of its stored moisture, especially when the root zone is dry.
Success looks like sturdy branching growth, increasingly long fishbone-shaped stems and a root system that moves through water without remaining wet for extended periods. As the plant fills the pot, those stems naturally begin cascading and create the dramatic shape Ric Rac is known for. Flowers are an incredible bonus on a mature plant, but healthy, substantial new stems are what I would watch first when deciding how well the plant is growing.
