Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Rhipsalis pilocarpa, commonly called hairy stem mistletoe cactus, is an epiphytic cactus native to Brazil known for its slender, trailing stems covered in fine white hairs and small bristles. What makes this plant special is its soft, textured appearance—unlike desert cacti, it grows in cascading chains of fuzzy stems and can produce fragrant white flowers followed by small pink berries.

Light should be bright but filtered to keep the stems full and healthy. Place it in an east-facing window or a bright south exposure where it gets consistent indirect light without prolonged harsh sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, stems become thinner and more spaced out. Strong, even light keeps the plant fuller, denser, and more textured.

Watering should stay more consistent than desert cacti. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a very airy mix of orchid bark, perlite, and cactus soil. Because it naturally grows attached to trees, airflow around the roots is important. If stems wrinkle and feel thin, it’s ready for water. If stems become mushy or translucent, the roots are staying too wet rather than drying out.

This plant communicates through stem texture and fullness. Thick, slightly firm stems indicate stable moisture and healthy light. Long gaps between stem segments or sparse growth signal it needs more light. Slight wrinkling means it has dried out too far, while softening at the base points to excess moisture.
