Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Mexican butterwort Pinguicula agnata hybrid is a rosette-forming carnivorous plant native to limestone regions of Mexico, where it grows in mineral-rich, fast-draining conditions. It produces broad, slightly cupped leaves covered in tiny sticky glands that trap small insects. The color ranges from soft green to pale peach or pink depending on light. What makes this plant desirable is its ability to form dense clusters over time and shift between two distinct growth phases, a sticky carnivorous phase and a tighter, non-sticky succulent phase.

Light requirements start with direction. Place it in a south or west-facing window for strong, bright light to maintain color and active growth. It can sit in an east window but will stay greener with less color. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–12 inches from the canopy. This is a medium to high-light plant, and stronger light keeps rosettes compact and encourages that slight pink tone.

Watering and environment must match its phase. In carnivorous phase, keep a shallow tray of water and allow the media to stay lightly moist, not saturated. In succulent phase, remove standing water and let the media dry more between watering. Always use a mineral-based mix (pumice, sand, perlite) with no heavy organic content. Leaves losing dew mean it’s too dry or in succulent phase, mushy bases point to too much water, and stretching or pale color indicates not enough light. Keep airflow steady and avoid stagnant, wet conditions.
