The Chinese Money Plant, or Pilea peperomioides, originates from the Yunnan province of China. It was first discovered by a Norwegian missionary named Frans H. A. P. J. de Silva in the 1940s. He brought it to Europe, where it gained popularity as a houseplant due to its attractive round leaves and easy care. It’s sometimes called the "friendship plant" because it’s often shared among friends.
Though its origin is in China, it’s now widely cultivated around the world as a beloved indoor plant.
The Chinese Money Plant, also known as the Pilea peperomioides, is a popular and easy-to-care-for houseplant. Here’s how to keep it healthy:
Light: It thrives in east facing light, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. A north- or east-facing window is ideal, where the plant will get light without being exposed to harsh sun.
Watering: Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Be careful not to overwater, as it can lead to root rot. Make sure the pot has drainage to allow excess water to escape.
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a general houseplant mix with added perlite or sand for extra drainage.
Temperature: Chinese money plants prefer temperatures between 60-75°F. Keep them away from drafts, and avoid placing them in cold rooms or near heating vents.
Fertilizing: Feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
Humidity: The plant appreciates average humidity levels but can tolerate lower humidity as well. If the air is dry, you can increase humidity by misting the plant occasionally or placing a humidity tray underneath.
Repotting: Chinese money plants grow relatively quickly and may need to be repotted every 1-2 years. When repotting, choose a pot that is just slightly larger than the current one to prevent root rot.
Pests: These plants are generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or mealybugs. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Propagation: The Chinese money plant is easy to propagate by cutting off the baby plants (pups) that grow at the base. Simply cut them off and replant them in fresh soil.

Let customers speak for us
from 447 reviewsI was surprised with a text from Mel, letting me know my options for selecting my first plant and asking my input about what plant I wanted. I was able to text back what I thought and just a couple days later, a beautiful black velvet Alocasia arrived, thoughtfully wrapped, all snug with a warming pouch. What a fun idea and well executed. I certainly look forward to next month! Thanks for being so informative, as well.
I purchased two varieties of synonyms from the shop. They arrived well-packed and literally not one blemish! It was shocking in the best way. Highly recommend this shop!
I am not one to respond to many emails or surveys but this book resonated with me in a special way today.
Long story short we have been thru a lot of trauma in the last 5 years. Loss in a hurricane, cancer and other surgeries between my husband and I.
A little personal, but relevant, we got in a tiff today because of how many plants I have acquired. I needed his help because I had surgery on Weds. Admittedly I have spent a lot on plants in the last 2 years but your book rang so true for me when you explained how plants support is by creating a calming environment. That whole paragraph spoke volumes to me as to why they are so important to me and my healing journey. Yes I most likely need to slow down in my purchases but even when it’s a chore to water and care for them by the time I am finished there is so much joy and accomplishment. Thank you for helping me make that connection. It helped me in a moment when I needed that clarity and how they impact my every day life.
This book is very well written and the illustration is stunning. I can’t wait to get the next volume! So much appreciated. Thank you
