Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Delosperma echinatum, commonly called pickle plant, is a succulent native to South Africa known for its small, cylindrical leaves covered in tiny, soft bristles that give it a fuzzy, pickle-like appearance. What makes this plant special is its playful texture—those translucent hairs catch the light, giving it a slightly sparkly look while staying compact and trailing.

Light drives how tight and upright the growth stays. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the stems will stretch and the leaves will space out, losing that dense, stacked look. Strong light keeps the plant compact and full.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant shows thirst through slight shriveling while staying firm. If the stems become soft or translucent, the roots are staying too wet. If growth becomes elongated and weak, it’s reacting to light, not water.
