Delosperma echinatum (Pickle Plant).
Native to South Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky environments with intense sun, fast drainage, and long dry periods between rainfall.
This is a novelty succulent valued for its cylindrical, “pickle-like” leaves covered in soft, bristle-like hairs. It stays compact and clusters over time, making it a strong shelf or small pot plant with texture-driven appeal.
Leaves are thick, elongated, and finger-like with a bright green color and translucent, fuzzy spines. Growth is low and spreading, forming small mounds with a slightly trailing habit as it matures.

Light requirements.
Prefers south and west windows.
Place directly at the window. Can sit 1–2 ft back only if light is very strong.
Under grow lights use 5000K–6500K.
Distance from canopy.
8–12 inches for compact growth.
Foot-candles: 2,000–5,000+ to maintain tight, upright structure. Below 1,500 fc leads to stretching and weak growth.

Watering & environment.
Allow soil to fully dry out between waterings.
Always check the root zone. The entire pot should be dry, not just the surface.
Requires very fast-draining soil with strong airflow. Prefers lower humidity and warm temperatures above 65°F.

What your plant is telling you.
Needs water: leaves begin to wrinkle slightly and lose firmness.
Too wet: leaves become soft, translucent, and may drop; base can rot quickly in heavy soil.
Light issues: elongated, spaced-out growth and loss of compact shape indicate not enough light. Pale or washed color also signals insufficient intensity.
