Philodendron ‘White Knight’ | White Knight Philodendron

Dark green leaves splashed, streaked and sometimes heavily sectioned with creamy white variegation make White Knight one of those Philodendrons where every new leaf is worth watching. The stems are just as distinctive, developing deep burgundy to reddish-brown coloration with contrasting white or cream markings. Variegation will naturally vary from leaf to leaf, so one new leaf may be heavily white while the next carries only a small splash. That unpredictability is part of what makes this plant so much fun to grow.

White Knight is a climbing Philodendron rather than a compact self-heading plant. Young plants can stay relatively upright for a while, but as the stem lengthens, giving it a moss pole, plank or other vertical support allows the plant to climb and helps create a more mature growth habit. With good usable light, an established root system and something to climb, successive leaves can become substantially larger while the spacing between nodes remains tighter.

For natural light, place it approximately 1–2 feet from an east-facing window or 2–3 feet from a south-facing window and aim for approximately 1,000–2,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. The green portions of a variegated leaf are doing most of the photosynthetic work, so a heavily variegated plant has less green tissue available than an all-green Philodendron. Good usable light supports growth, leaf size and tighter internode spacing. The amount of white on each new leaf is influenced by the plant’s genetics and growing point, so stronger light does not create variegation.

Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture positioned approximately 8–12 inches above the canopy, adjusting the fixture as the plant climbs to maintain approximately 1,000–2,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Keeping the fixture positioned with the growing point becomes especially important once the plant begins moving vertically up its support.

Water when your plant needs watered. White Knight does well in a loose, airy root zone that can take up water thoroughly and then begin drying as the plant uses that moisture. A mix of potting soil or coco-based substrate with coarse orchid bark and coarse perlite or pumice gives the roots a combination of moisture retention, drainage and airflow. How quickly the pot dries will change with light, temperature, root mass, pot size and how actively the plant is growing, so use the plant and the moisture through the pot rather than a calendar to determine when it is ready for water.

Watch the newest growth closely. Increasing distance between nodes, smaller successive leaves or a plant leaning strongly toward its light source can point you back toward usable light. A new leaf that repeatedly struggles to move cleanly through the cataphyll can also be a reason to look at recent watering consistency, root health, usable light and the conditions surrounding that developing leaf. Give tender new foliage time to emerge and harden naturally rather than trying to manually open it. White portions can also develop brown areas more readily than green tissue because they contain little to no chlorophyll, so look at the plant’s overall direction and newest growth rather than judging its health by whether every white section remains flawless.

Success looks like an actively climbing plant with a healthy growing point, strong roots, increasingly substantial leaves and manageable spacing between the nodes. As it establishes on its support, aerial roots may begin attaching while the foliage gradually gains size. The pattern on every leaf will be different. Follow the progression of the plant instead: strong new growth, increasing maturity and a White Knight that keeps giving you a completely new leaf to look forward to.
