‘Silver Stripe’
Philodendron ‘Silver Stripe’ is a variegated form of the Heartleaf Philodendron, Philodendron hederaceum. Its heart-shaped leaves combine deep green with lighter green, cream and silvery-white markings that typically run through the center of the leaf. The pattern can vary from leaf to leaf, giving an established vine a layered mix of colors rather than one perfectly uniform stripe. It is closely associated with the group of variegated Heartleaf Philodendrons that includes ‘Brasil’, ‘Cream Splash’ and similar forms, and trade names within this group are not always applied consistently.
Silver Stripe is naturally a climber, even though it is commonly grown as a trailing plant. Its vines produce aerial roots that allow it to attach and grow upward. You can let it cascade from a shelf or hanging basket, but giving it a pole, plank or other vertical support allows it to grow more like it naturally would. As an established vine climbs, successive leaves can become larger and more substantial. A trailing plant generally maintains smaller, more juvenile foliage.
For natural light, start Silver Stripe approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window. Philodendron Silver Stripe prefers approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Useful light supports compact growth and helps the plant maintain strong contrast between its green and lighter variegated tissue. Window direction and distance are starting points. Trees, overhangs, neighboring buildings, window size, season, screens and glass can all change how much light actually reaches the plant.
If you’re using grow lights, choose a 5000–6500K fixture and aim for the same approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the foliage. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, not its strength. Foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. There is no universal distance between Silver Stripe and a grow light because fixtures vary considerably in output and coverage. With a long vine or a plant climbing a tall support, measure different areas rather than assuming the entire plant is receiving the same amount of light.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow the root zone to use a good portion of its available moisture before thoroughly watering again. Silver Stripe handles some dryback well, but repeatedly pushing it into a severe wilt isn’t necessary. How quickly it uses water will change with light, temperature, root development, pot size and the amount of foliage it is supporting. An airy, well-draining aroid mix allows you to water thoroughly while maintaining oxygen around the roots.
Read the vine and the newest growth. Increasingly long spaces between leaves, progressively smaller foliage or vines stretching strongly toward a light source are reasons to check how much useful light the plant is receiving. The amount of cream, silver and green will naturally vary between leaves, so don’t judge the entire plant from a single unusually green or highly variegated leaf. If you’re growing it vertically, aerial roots attaching to the support and increasing leaf size are useful signs that the plant is beginning to mature.
Success looks like steady vine growth, firm heart-shaped foliage, relatively compact spacing between leaves and continued contrast between green, cream and silvery markings. A trailing Silver Stripe can create a long cascade of patterned foliage, while a climbing plant can develop larger leaves and a more substantial growth habit. Watch the progression of the newest growth rather than expecting every leaf to look identical.
