Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Philodendron pastazanum × plowmanii is a hybrid combining two South American terrestrial Philodendrons known for large, dramatic foliage and a creeping growth habit. The hybrid typically develops broad, heart-shaped leaves with prominent venation and substantial petioles. P. pastazanum contributes its broad, rounded foliage, while P. plowmanii is known for more textured, undulating petioles and distinctive leaf structure. Because this is a hybrid, individual plants can lean more heavily toward either parent, so leaf shape, petiole texture and overall appearance can vary as the plant matures.
This is a crawler, not a climbing Philodendron. Its thick stem, or rhizome, wants to travel horizontally across the surface of the growing medium rather than climb a pole. Give it room to move forward. A long rectangular planter can work especially well because the rhizome can continue traveling without immediately reaching the edge of the pot. Keep the rhizome at or near the surface rather than burying it deeply. As the plant establishes a larger root system and continues crawling, new leaves can become considerably larger and the plant can eventually occupy a substantial amount of horizontal space.
For natural light, start Philodendron pastazanum × plowmanii approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window. Philodendron pastazanum × plowmanii prefers approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Useful light supports stronger petioles and increasingly substantial foliage as the plant matures. Window direction and distance are starting points because trees, overhangs, neighboring buildings, window size, season, screens and glass can all change the amount of light actually reaching the leaves.
If you’re using grow lights, choose a 5000–6500K fixture and aim for the same approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the foliage. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, not its strength. Foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. This hybrid can eventually become quite wide, so pay attention to the coverage of your fixture as the plant grows. There is no universal distance between the light and the canopy. Measure at the leaves and make sure the entire growing area is receiving useful light rather than concentrating the fixture over one leaf.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow the root zone to use some of its available moisture before thoroughly watering again, but avoid keeping it continuously saturated. An airy, well-draining aroid mix provides moisture while still allowing oxygen around the developing root system. As the rhizome travels across the surface, it can establish new roots along its path. Pot shape matters with these crawlers, and giving the growing point somewhere to go can be just as important as simply increasing pot size.
Read the growing point and newest leaves. If the rhizome is approaching the edge of the container, that is your signal that the plant will soon need additional horizontal growing room. Progressively smaller leaves, unusually stretched petioles or foliage strongly reaching toward the light are reasons to check how much useful light the plant is receiving. Because this is a hybrid, don’t expect every plant to develop exactly the same leaf shape or petiole characteristics.
Success looks like a healthy rhizome steadily moving across the pot, establishing roots as it travels and producing increasingly substantial foliage. New leaves should continue opening strong and well-sized, while the petioles become sturdy enough to support the developing canopy. Give this plant horizontal room, useful light and a healthy root zone, and it can mature into a wide, impressive Philodendron that shows characteristics from both of its distinctive parents.
