Philodendron Mayoi 4”

Philodendron mayoi is a tropical climbing aroid native to the rainforests of Brazil. It is known for its deeply lobed leaves that resemble a hand or palm frond, giving it a lush, jungle-like appearance. As the plant matures and climbs, the foliage becomes larger and more dramatically divided. Its unique leaf shape is often mistaken for an Alocasia, but Philodendron mayoi is a vigorous climber that develops its best form when given support.

Place Philodendron mayoi within 1–3 feet of an east-facing or south-facing window. Bright natural light encourages larger leaves, stronger growth, and tighter spacing between nodes. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage, while medium-strength lights work best at 10–14 inches. A moss pole, plank, or trellis will encourage the plant to produce larger, more mature foliage and showcase the deeply cut leaf shape it is known for.

Water when the root zone is nearing dryness, never on a schedule. A chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot will provide a much better indication of moisture levels than checking the surface of the soil. Philodendron mayoi thrives in a chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite that allows air to reach the roots. If new leaves are emerging smaller than older ones or the spaces between leaves are becoming longer, the plant is often asking for more light or a better climbing support. Once established on a pole, growth can become surprisingly fast and the foliage increasingly dramatic.
