Philodendron gigas is a climbing species native to Panama, prized for its large, elongated, velvety leaves. Juvenile foliage begins relatively narrow, but a mature climbing plant can develop dramatically larger, darker leaves with a soft velvet surface and prominent lighter veining. Leaves that reach 3-4 feet, this is what makes gigas special, it’s the transformation it makes as it matures—the foliage can become enormous compared with the small leaves seen on young plants.
Light and climbing support are important for developing its mature foliage. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives strong, consistent light without prolonged harsh sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned about 8–12 inches above the canopy. Give gigas a moss pole, plank, or other sturdy vertical support if your goal is larger mature leaves. Insufficient light or allowing a climbing stem to trail can result in longer internodes and progressively smaller foliage.
Allow the root zone to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain. Use a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. Check deeper into the pot with a chopstick or water meter rather than judging moisture from the surface. Keep it warm with moderate humidity and consistent airflow. Extremely high humidity is not required to grow gigas successfully in a home when its light, roots, watering, and temperature are kept consistent.
Watch the newest leaves and internode spacing for its clearest signals. Progressively larger leaves, firm petioles, shorter spacing, and a stem actively attaching to its support indicate strong growth. Smaller successive leaves and increasingly long internodes usually point toward insufficient light or inadequate climbing support. Drooping paired with a dry root zone signals that it is ready for water, while yellowing foliage or soft growth with consistently wet soil points toward excess moisture. New velvet leaves can emerge lighter and softer before darkening and developing their characteristic texture as they harden.
