Philodendron gigas is a rare and striking climbing aroid native to Panama, treasured for its long, velvety leaves that start with bronzy hues and mature to deep green with pale, dramatic veining. This plant is a showstopper in any collection and can grow impressively large when given the right support and conditions.

Philodendron gigas thrives in bright, indirect light—ideally near an east- or north-facing window, or pulled a few feet back from a south- or west-facing window to avoid direct sun. Harsh light can scorch its delicate, velvety leaves, while too little light will slow growth and reduce leaf size. Provide a moss pole or trellis to support its natural climbing habit and encourage larger, more mature foliage. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, and use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix to prevent root rot.

This tropical beauty loves warm temperatures (70–85°F / 21–29°C) and high humidity (60% or higher). Regular misting, a humidifier, or placing it near other humidity-loving plants will help keep its velvety leaves happy. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Keep it away from cold drafts or AC vents, and wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and enhance its natural sheen. With consistent care, Philodendron gigas will reward you with dramatic, jungle-style growth that only gets better with time.
