Philodendron El Choco Red is a climbing aroid native to the Chocó region of Colombia in northwestern South America. It grows in humid tropical forest where it climbs trees and develops large velvety leaves with deep green tops and burgundy undersides. That red underside is not a deficiency it is genetic and one of the defining features that makes this plant so desirable in collections.

Water this plant when 75% dry with attention to airflow and root health. I would bottom water when possible then allow it to drain fully and dry about halfway down the pot before watering again. El Choco does not like to stay soggy and it will show stress quickly if roots stay wet especially in cooler months. A chunky aroid mix with bark perlite and aeration is important and clear pots help you see root health early before foliage declines.

Direction of light should be bright indirect with no harsh direct afternoon sun. An east window or pulled back from a south window works well and consistent direction of light prevents leaf twisting. Signals are dramatic on this plant. Yellowing lower leaves often mean overwatering or compact soil while smaller new leaves point to insufficient light or lack of vertical support. If it stops producing larger velvety leaves and instead pushes narrow growth it is asking for more light and a pole to climb. When happy it produces thicker larger leaves with that rich red underside becoming more intense.
