Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Long, narrow leaves covered in irregular shades of green, lime, chartreuse and golden yellow give this Philodendron a completely different look from solid-colored varieties. The pattern can appear mottled, speckled, streaked or marbled, and the balance of green and gold can change considerably from one leaf to the next. Its exact cultivar history and parentage are not reliably documented, so it is best treated as a named cultivated Philodendron rather than assigning it a species or parentage that cannot be confirmed.
Young plants can look relatively compact because the leaves develop along closely spaced nodes, but this is ultimately a climbing Philodendron. As the central stem develops, aerial roots form at the nodes and the plant can attach to a vertical support. Giving it something to climb helps stabilize the stem and gives the plant the opportunity to produce increasingly substantial, elongated foliage as it matures.
For natural light indoors, place it directly in an east-facing window or approximately 1–2 feet from a south-facing window. It prefers approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. The lower portion of this range can support growth, but the gold and chartreuse coloration may not be as strongly expressed when the plant is consistently grown at lower light levels. Light does not create the variegation, but sufficient usable light helps support both the plant and its colorful foliage. If internode spacing begins increasing, successive leaves become smaller or the stem starts reaching strongly toward the window, move it closer to its light source.
Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture positioned approximately 8–12 inches above the canopy, aiming for 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. If maintaining strong gold and chartreuse coloration is important, aim toward the middle to upper portion of that range rather than keeping the plant at the lowest usable intensity. Kelvin describes the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Keep the fixture above the newest growth and adjust its height as the plant climbs.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow it to use a good portion of the available moisture before watering thoroughly again, but avoid repeatedly taking an actively growing plant to an extreme dry. Use a loose aroid mix with potting material for some moisture retention combined with chunky bark and perlite or pumice to create air space around the roots. As the plant develops a larger root system and more foliage, its water use can change considerably, so check the root zone rather than following a watering schedule.
Pay attention to the newest leaves, the spacing between them and how easily new growth develops. Increasing internode spacing, progressively smaller leaves or a stem that begins reaching strongly toward its light source can indicate that usable light is too low. New leaves that repeatedly emerge curled, cramped or have difficulty unfurling are a reason to look at the plant’s recent environment, including moisture swings, root health, available light and conditions around the developing foliage. Avoid forcing a trapped leaf open because tender new tissue can be damaged easily. Changes in the amount of gold from one leaf to another can also be completely normal with a variegated cultivar.
Success looks like healthy roots, compact spacing along the climbing stem and increasingly substantial leaves as the plant matures. A supported plant can develop larger, longer foliage while continuing to produce its characteristic mix of green, lime and gold. Don’t judge its health by how yellow a single leaf becomes. Look at the overall direction of the plant: strong new growth, increasing leaf size, healthy green tissue, good attachment to its support and consistent development over several leaves.
