Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Philodendron bicolor is a tropical climbing aroid native to the humid rainforests of Brazil. This species is appreciated for its elongated, elegant foliage and the striking contrast between the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves, which inspired its name “bicolor.” As it matures and climbs, the leaves become larger and more impressive, giving the plant a refined, collector-worthy appearance. In its natural habitat, it spends its life scaling trees beneath the rainforest canopy where warmth, humidity, and filtered sunlight are abundant.

Place Philodendron bicolor within 1–3 feet of an east-facing or south-facing window. Strong light encourages larger foliage, sturdier growth, and better coloration. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage, while medium-strength lights work best at 10–14 inches. Providing a moss pole, plank, or other climbing support will help the plant mature more quickly and develop larger leaves.

Water when the root zone is approaching dryness, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to determine moisture levels throughout the pot before watering. A chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides the drainage and airflow this species enjoys. If the plant begins producing smaller leaves, longer internodes, or weaker growth, it is often signaling that it needs more light, a larger root system, or a climbing surface to continue maturing.
