Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Opuntia, commonly called prickly pear cactus, is a desert cactus native to the Americas known for its flat, paddle-shaped pads that grow in stacked segments. The pads can range from green to blue-green and may develop spines or remain relatively smooth depending on the variety. Its bold, sculptural form makes it a strong statement plant, especially as it grows taller and branches out.

Light is critical for maintaining compact, healthy growth. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives the strongest natural light available. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. Too little light will cause stretching between pads and thinner growth, while strong light keeps the pads thick, flat, and properly spaced.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it fast-draining. If pads begin to elongate or space out, it is reaching for more light. If pads wrinkle slightly but stay firm, it is ready for water. Soft, mushy areas or discoloration at the base point to excess moisture at the roots rather than underwatering.
