Opuntia cactus is native to desert and dry regions of North and South America where it grows in intense sun and extremely well drained soils. The plant is known for its flat paddle shaped segments that grow in stacked layers forming upright or spreading structures. Many species also produce colorful flowers and fruit outdoors. Because it evolved in high light desert environments it requires the strongest light available indoors to maintain compact paddles and healthy growth. Place it in a south window within zero to one foot of the glass so it receives several hours of direct sun each day. A west window within one to two feet can also support healthy growth. If using a grow light place the plant directly under the light for ten to twelve hours daily.

This cactus prefers extremely fast draining soil that allows moisture to move quickly through the pot. A cactus mix combined with pumice coarse sand and perlite creates the structure needed to keep roots healthy. Use a chopstick or water meter to confirm the root zone is completely dry before watering again. When watering soak the soil thoroughly and allow it to drain fully before returning the plant to its location.

The plant gives clear signals when conditions change. Paddles that wrinkle or soften slightly usually indicate the plant has remained dry for too long and is ready for water. Soft yellowing tissue at the base often signals excess moisture or soil that drains too slowly. If the paddles begin growing thin and stretched the plant is searching for stronger light and should be moved closer to the window or grow light.
