Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Musa zebrina, commonly known as Blood Banana, is a tropical banana native to the rainforests of Indonesia. It is grown primarily for its stunning foliage rather than its fruit. The large green leaves are splashed with deep burgundy-red markings that resemble brush strokes across the leaf surface. In warm climates it can grow into an impressive landscape specimen, while indoors it brings a bold tropical feel with its oversized foliage and rapid growth. New leaves unfurl from the center of the plant, creating a constantly changing display throughout the growing season.

Place Musa zebrina directly in front of an east-facing or south-facing window where it can receive the brightest conditions available indoors. This is a high-light plant that performs best with abundant natural light. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage. The more light it receives, the stronger the leaf markings and overall growth will be. Insufficient light often results in smaller leaves, slower growth, and fading coloration.

Water when the root zone is beginning to dry, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to monitor moisture levels throughout the pot. Musa zebrina is a heavy drinker during active growth and appreciates consistent moisture, but it should not remain waterlogged. A chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides drainage while allowing the roots to breathe. Torn leaves are normal and occur naturally as banana leaves expand. Brown leaf edges often indicate the plant has become too dry, while yellowing lower leaves can be part of the normal aging process as the plant pushes new growth from the center.
