Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Monstera Peru is a tropical climbing aroid known for thick, deeply textured foliage that looks very different from the smooth leaves of many familiar Monsteras. The leaves are firm and leathery with a puckered surface, prominent venation and shades of deep to lighter green that emphasize the texture. You may see this plant sold under names such as Monstera karstenianum, but that botanical name is not accepted for this plant, so Monstera ‘Peru’ is the more responsible name to use. Despite the common name, the exact wild origin of the cultivated plant sold as Monstera Peru is not firmly established enough to claim that it originated specifically in Peru.
Monstera Peru is a climber. Its stems produce aerial roots that allow it to attach to trees and other surfaces as it grows upward. It can be allowed to trail, but giving it a pole, plank or other vertical support allows it to follow its natural climbing habit and can encourage larger, more substantial foliage. Unlike Monstera deliciosa and Monstera adansonii, Monstera Peru is valued for its heavily textured leaves rather than fenestrations, so don’t expect mature leaves to develop the familiar Monstera holes and splits.
For natural light, place Monstera Peru approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window as a starting point. Aim for approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Too little useful light can produce longer spaces between leaves, smaller new foliage and stretched growth as the vine searches for stronger light. Window direction and distance are starting points because season, trees, overhangs, screens, glass and window size can change the actual intensity reaching the foliage.
Under grow lights, use a 5000–6500K full-spectrum grow light approximately 10–14 inches above the top of the canopy as a starting point, aiming for the same approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. As Monstera Peru climbs, move the light with the growing canopy so the newest foliage continues receiving useful light rather than allowing the vine to gradually grow away from the fixture.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow the root zone to use a good portion of its available moisture before watering thoroughly again, but repeatedly pushing the plant into a severe wilt isn’t necessary. Its thick leaves may make it look almost succulent, but Monstera Peru is still a tropical climbing aroid. An airy, well-draining aroid mix allows water to move through the pot while maintaining oxygen around the roots. Light, temperature, root development and the amount of foliage will all affect how quickly the plant uses water.
Read the vine as it develops. Increasingly long spaces between leaves, progressively smaller new foliage or a vine strongly reaching toward its light source are reasons to check how much useful light it is receiving. If you’re growing it vertically, watch the aerial roots and successive leaf size as well. Roots beginning to attach to the support and new leaves becoming increasingly substantial are signs that the plant is settling into its climbing growth habit.
Success looks like a sturdy vine actively climbing its support with closely spaced, firm foliage and increasingly substantial leaves. The characteristic puckered texture should remain prominent as new leaves mature and harden. Rather than waiting for fenestrations that this plant isn’t known for producing, watch leaf size, stem strength, aerial-root attachment and the progression of the newest growth.
