Monstera Burle Marx Flame -Clay

Philodendron ‘Burle Marx Flame’ is a rare, highly sought-after plant known for its narrow, deeply serrated leaves that resemble flickering flames as they mature. The foliage starts simpler and becomes more dramatic over time, developing elongated, jagged edges that give it a very distinct, sculptural look. It grows upright and benefits from support, producing more defined, mature leaves as it climbs.

Light drives the development of that signature leaf shape. Place it in an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window where it gets steady, bright light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K at 500–900 foot-candles. Too little light will result in longer spacing between leaves and more simplified, less serrated growth, while stronger light encourages tighter nodes and more pronounced “flame” shaping.

Watering should stay balanced and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep the roots airy. If new leaves are coming in narrow but without deep serration, that points to not enough light or lack of support. If the plant is producing wider, flatter leaves instead of elongated ones, it’s still in a juvenile state or not climbing. Slower, stalled growth with no change in leaf complexity often ties back to light, not watering.
