Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Monstera deliciosa is native to the tropical forests of Central America and is one of the most iconic houseplants because of its large, split leaves called fenestrations. These splits develop as the plant matures and climbs, allowing light to pass through in its natural environment. What makes this plant desirable is its bold, architectural look and the way the leaves size up dramatically with proper support like a moss pole. It grows as a climbing plant and will stay smaller and less fenestrated if left unsupported.

Place this plant in a south or west-facing window about 3–6 feet from the glass, or an east-facing window 1–3 feet away. Strong light is what drives fenestrations and larger leaf development. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–12 inches above the canopy for best growth. If the plant is not splitting or new leaves are smaller, it needs more light. If leaves are bleaching or developing dry patches, it may be too close to direct sun or light intensity is too high.

Water using a chopstick or meter and let the soil dry about halfway to almost fully dry depending on your environment before watering again. Monsteras prefer a chunky, well-draining mix and do not want to stay wet. Yellowing leaves and soft stems point to overwatering, while drooping and curling indicate it’s too dry. Aerial roots are normal and can be directed into the soil or onto a support to help the plant climb and stabilize.
