Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Microsorum musifolium, commonly called Crocodile Fern. Native to Southeast Asia where it grows in warm, humid forest environments, often as an epiphyte. This plant is known for its unique textured leaves that resemble crocodile skin as they mature. The fronds are elongated, slightly wavy, and start smooth before developing that signature pattern, giving it strong visual interest without needing variegation. It has a bold, structured look while still feeling tropical and soft.

East or north window is ideal. It can sit right at the window or 1–3 ft back. Avoid direct sun, especially from south or west exposure, which will scorch and dull the texture. Grow lights: 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches above the canopy. Target 75–200 foot-candles. Too much light causes yellowing and crisping. Too little light slows growth and reduces leaf texture development.

Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. This plant does not want to fully dry out. Check the root zone and water when the top portion is drying but before it goes fully dry. Prefers higher humidity and consistent airflow. What it’s telling you: crispy edges mean too dry or low humidity. Yellowing leaves with soft bases mean too wet. Flat, less textured leaves mean not enough light. Curling or drooping fronds mean inconsistent watering.
