Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Kangaroo Paw Fern, Microsorum diversifolium, is a tropical fern native to Australia, grown for its thick, glossy, irregularly lobed leaves that resemble a kangaroo’s paw. Unlike delicate ferns, this one has a leathery texture and a more rugged, forgiving nature. It grows from creeping rhizomes that sit along the soil surface, slowly spreading and filling out the pot, making it a great option for a fuller, low-maintenance tropical look.

Light requirements start with direction. Place it in a north or east-facing window where it receives soft, indirect light. It can handle a west window if pulled back 3–5 feet, but avoid direct harsh sun which can scorch the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 12–18 inches from the canopy. This is a low to medium-light plant, and too much light will stress it more than too little.

Watering and environment should stay slightly moist but controlled. Let the top portion of the soil dry slightly, then water through and allow it to drain. Do not let it fully dry out, and do not keep it soggy. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Keep the rhizomes slightly exposed and never buried deep. Leaves curling or crisping mean it’s too dry or humidity is low, yellowing can indicate overwatering, and pale leaves may point to too much light. Keep humidity moderate with steady airflow and stable temperatures.
