Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Ludisia discolor, commonly called jewel orchid, is a terrestrial orchid native to Southeast Asia known for its deep green to nearly black velvety leaves marked with fine, shimmering red or gold veining. What makes this plant special is its foliage—not the flowers—offering a rich, jewel-like texture and color that stands out in lower light conditions while growing in a compact, creeping form.

Light should be low to moderate to preserve its color and texture. Place it in a north or east-facing window where it gets gentle, consistent light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. In stronger light, the leaves can lose that deep tone and appear washed out. Lower light keeps the color darker and more saturated.

Watering should stay consistent with slightly higher moisture than most orchids. Allow the top portion of the soil to dry slightly, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark that holds moisture while staying airy. This plant grows along stems, so if sections begin to collapse or blacken at the base, the roots are staying too wet. If leaves lose their velvety richness or appear dull, it’s often reacting to light or humidity. Slower, stretched growth indicates it needs more light, not more water.
