Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Hoya verticillata ‘Splash’
This is a silver-flecked form of a widespread and naturally variable tropical Asian species. Its thick, pointed green leaves develop irregular silver markings that can range from scattered flecks to much heavier splashing from leaf to leaf. The foliage is substantial and glossy, and mature plants can produce clusters of pale star-shaped flowers with contrasting centers.
This is a climbing and twining vine. Long exploratory stems are normal and can be allowed to trail or directed onto a trellis. Given support, the vines can wrap and continue upward while producing new pairs of leaves along the stem. Persistent peduncles can bloom repeatedly and remain useful after an individual flower cluster has finished.
For natural light, an east-facing window within about 1–2 feet or a west-facing window within about 1–3 feet is a practical starting point. Aim for approximately 1,000–2,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. The amount of silver is naturally variable, so stronger light should not be expected to create or guarantee heavier splash.
Under grow lights, use a 5000–6500K full-spectrum light approximately 8–12 inches above the canopy as a starting point, aiming for 1,000–2,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin describes the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. As exploratory vines extend, keep the growing ends within the useful footprint of the fixture.
The thick leaves provide some water storage, so allow a substantial portion of the root zone to dry before watering again rather than maintaining constant moisture. Water when your plant needs watered. Use an airy, fast-draining mix that allows water to move through while leaving oxygen around the roots.
Firm foliage and steady vine development are useful indicators of hydration and growth. If spaces between leaves become increasingly long or new foliage becomes smaller, check how much light is actually reaching the plant. Silver markings themselves are part of the foliage and should not be confused with damage simply because individual leaves carry different amounts.
Success looks like strong extending vines, firm pointed leaves, steady new growth and continued development of the plant’s characteristic silver patterning. With maturity and a supportive environment, peduncles and flower clusters can follow.
