Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Hoya crassipetiolata
Native to Vietnam, this species is known for elongated, pointed green leaves with a beautiful network of darker veins visible across the surface. The leaves can vary somewhat in width and markings, but the combination of long foliage and pronounced venation gives the plant a distinctive appearance. Mature plants can also produce rounded clusters of small star-shaped flowers.
This is a vigorous climbing Hoya capable of producing exceptionally long exploratory vines. Those runners are part of its normal growth habit rather than something the plant needs to have removed. A trellis or other climbing structure gives them somewhere to wrap and allows the plant to develop vertically rather than sending long vines across the surrounding space. New leaves can appear along those extending stems as growth continues.
For natural light, an east-facing window within about 1–2 feet or a west-facing window within about 1–3 feet is a good starting point. Aim for approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Adequate usable light supports stronger vine growth, closer spacing and development of substantial mature foliage.
Under grow lights, use a 5000–6500K full-spectrum light approximately 8–12 inches above the canopy as a starting point, aiming for approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin describes the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. This species can send vines well beyond the original pot very quickly, so adjust the light or redirect the vines as they grow to keep the active growing points within the useful light footprint.
Allow a good portion of the root zone to dry before watering thoroughly again, but there is no benefit to repeatedly pushing the plant through severe dehydration. Water when your plant needs watered. An airy, fast-draining mix gives the roots access to moisture while allowing excess water to move through and oxygen to return to the root zone.
The vines tell you quite a bit about the growing environment. Long exploratory runners by themselves are normal, but increasingly stretched spacing combined with smaller or weaker new leaves is a reason to check the amount of light reaching the plant. Watch leaf firmness and how quickly the root zone uses water rather than relying on a calendar.
A plant moving in the right direction will produce strong twining vines, firm elongated foliage and increasingly established climbing growth. As the plant matures, the network of veins becomes an important part of its appearance, while peduncles and flower clusters can eventually add another layer to an already impressive climbing Hoya.
