Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Gasteria is a slow-growing succulent native to South Africa, known for its thick, fleshy leaves often covered in speckles, bumps, or interesting patterns. The leaves grow in a fan-like arrangement when young and may develop into a rosette as the plant matures. Gasterias are closely related to Aloe and Haworthia but are generally more tolerant of lower light conditions, making them excellent houseplants for homes that don't receive intense sun.

For best growth, place Gasteria near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south- or west-facing window. They thrive in approximately 500–2,000 foot-candles. Under grow lights, use a 5000K–6500K full-spectrum light positioned 12–18 inches above the foliage. While they tolerate lower light than many succulents, growth will slow significantly and leaves may become elongated if light levels remain too low for extended periods.

Allow the soil to dry completely throughout the root zone before watering again. A fast-draining cactus or succulent mix is essential, as Gasteria is highly susceptible to root rot when kept consistently wet. Thick leaves that begin to wrinkle or feel less firm typically indicate the plant is ready for water. Yellowing, mushy leaves often signal overwatering, while stretched growth and wider spacing between leaves indicate insufficient light. Gasteria is a patient grower, so don't expect rapid growth, but with proper light and watering it can live for many years and gradually produce offsets that form attractive clusters.
