The Flapjack plant (Kalanchoe thyrsiflora or Kalanchoe luciae) is a low-maintenance succulent known for its thick, paddle-shaped leaves that can blush red around the edges with enough sunlight. To keep it happy indoors, place it in a south- or west-facing window where it can get bright, direct light for several hours a day. Without enough light, it will become leggy and lose its color. Rotate the plant regularly to help it grow evenly.

Watering should be done sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. In the cooler months or lower light, you’ll need to water less often. Overwatering is the quickest way to harm a Flapjack, so always err on the dry side. Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix to prevent root rot.

Flapjacks prefer warm, dry conditions and don’t need much humidity, making them ideal for indoor environments. Avoid placing them near cold drafts or overly humid areas like bathrooms. As the plant grows, older leaves near the base may dry out — this is normal and they can be gently removed. With enough light and proper care, your Flapjack will stay compact, colorful, and thriving.
