Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Fatsia japonica ‘Variegata’, native to Japan and South Korea, is a bold foliage plant known for its large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves marked with creamy white to yellow variegation. The leaves are thick and deeply lobed, giving it a tropical, full look while still being a hardy structural plant. It grows upright and bushy, creating a strong presence without needing support.

Light supports both leaf size and variegation. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it receives steady, bright light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can scorch the lighter sections, while too little light will cause the variegation to fade and growth to become thinner.

Watering should stay moderate and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy. If new leaves are coming in smaller with less variegation, it is not getting enough light. If the plant begins to stretch with longer stems between leaves, it is reaching for more light. Yellowing at the base with soft stems can indicate excess moisture in the soil rather than a natural shed.
