Epipremnum Pinnatum Marble Flame 6” totem

Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Marble Flame’ is a variegated climbing aroid grown for its heavily marbled green, cream and white foliage. Each leaf develops its own pattern, with some carrying broad areas of cream and white while others show finer marbling throughout the green. The thick foliage and high-contrast variegation make Marble Flame especially striking while young, but its ability to change dramatically as it climbs and matures is a large part of its collector appeal.

Marble Flame is a true climber. Juvenile leaves begin relatively small and entire, but Epipremnum pinnatum changes considerably as it matures. When allowed to climb a moss pole, plank or other vertical support, the leaves can become progressively larger and begin developing deep splits along the margins. A plant allowed to trail can continue growing, but climbing gives it the opportunity to develop the larger, more mature foliage characteristic of the species.

For natural light, place Marble Flame approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window as a starting point. Aim for approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Its cream and white portions contain less chlorophyll than its green tissue, so providing enough usable light helps support the entire plant. Low light can result in longer spaces between leaves, smaller new foliage and slower growth. Window direction and distance are starting points because trees, overhangs, screens, glass, window size and season all affect the actual light reaching the plant.

Under grow lights, use a 5000–6500K full-spectrum grow light approximately 8–12 inches above the top of the canopy as a starting point, aiming for the same approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. As Marble Flame climbs, move the light with the growing canopy so the newest leaves continue receiving useful light. Light supports the variegated plant and its growth, but increasing light does not create or guarantee additional variegation.

Water when your plant needs watered. Allow the root zone to use a good portion of its available moisture before watering thoroughly again rather than following a weekly schedule. An airy, well-draining aroid mix provides the balance of moisture and oxygen its climbing roots prefer. As the plant becomes larger, develops more roots and carries more foliage, it may begin using water more quickly, so the pot should be checked based on the plant and its environment rather than the number of days since its last watering.

Read the vine as it grows. Longer spaces between leaves, progressively smaller foliage or a vine stretching strongly toward its light source can indicate that the plant is not receiving enough useful light. Aerial roots forming along the stem are normal and can be directed into a support. If the plant is climbing but the leaves remain small, look at both light and whether the stem is actually attaching to its support. Variegation will naturally vary from leaf to leaf, so changes in the amount of white or cream on a single leaf are not automatically a sign that something is wrong.

Success looks like an actively climbing vine with sturdy growth, aerial roots attaching to its support and successive leaves becoming increasingly substantial. With maturity and the right growing environment, the foliage can begin developing the characteristic splits of Epipremnum pinnatum. Watch the progression of the newest growth over several leaves. Increasing leaf size, tighter growth and movement toward mature leaf shape are strong signs that Marble Flame is growing well.
