Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Hedera canariensis, commonly called Algerian ivy, is a fast-growing trailing or climbing vine known for its larger, broader leaves compared to English ivy. Native to North Africa and the Canary Islands, it produces thick, slightly glossy foliage that can be solid green or variegated with cream margins. What makes Algerian ivy stand out is its bold leaf size and vigorous growth, giving a fuller, more tropical look than Hedera helix while still maintaining that classic ivy trailing habit.

Place Hedera canariensis in an east window or a few feet back from a south or west window where it receives bright, even light without prolonged harsh direct sun. It can tolerate lower light, but growth will slow and spacing between leaves will increase. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and position the light about 10 to 14 inches above the plant. It performs best around 150 to 500 foot-candles. More light will keep it dense and full, while lower light will cause longer, leggier vines.

Allow the soil to dry about halfway down before watering, and always check deeper in the pot rather than relying on the surface. Hedera canariensis does not tolerate staying overly wet, but it also should not be left bone dry for long periods. If leaves start to curl, crisp, or drop, it is often a sign of underwatering or dry air. If leaves yellow and fall off, especially closer to the base, the soil is likely staying too wet. Good airflow is important, and like other ivies, it can be prone to spider mites if conditions are too dry.
