Radermachera sinica, commonly called China doll plant, is a tropical tree native to southern China and Taiwan known for its glossy, finely divided leaves that create a dense, elegant canopy. What makes this plant special is its delicate, fern-like appearance combined with a woody trunk, giving it the look of a miniature indoor tree while maintaining lush, vibrant foliage.

Light plays a major role in keeping the plant full and preventing leaf drop. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light without prolonged harsh afternoon sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, growth slows, branches become sparse, and the plant is more likely to drop leaves. Strong, even light encourages dense branching and a fuller canopy.

Allow the soil to dry about halfway between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. A well-draining mix of succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides the oxygen-rich root zone it prefers. Avoid letting the soil become completely dry or remain constantly wet, as either extreme can lead to leaf drop. If the leaves begin to wilt while the soil is dry, it's ready for water. Yellowing leaves while the soil remains wet indicate the roots are staying too saturated.

China doll plants communicate quickly through their foliage. Sudden leaf drop is usually a response to environmental changes such as moving the plant, changes in light, temperature swings, or inconsistent watering rather than disease. Small, pale leaves and long, stretched stems indicate the plant needs more light. Once it settles into a stable location with consistent care, it typically produces dense, healthy new growth.
